‘Veteran Honor Banners’ approved for display in Hackleburg

HACKLEBURG “Veteran Honor Banners” may soon be displayed in Hackleburg after a measure was approved during the Hackleburg Town Council meeting on Monday, April 20.
Officials with the American Legion Sonny James Post 165 of Hackleburg attended the meeting and presented a proposal to bring the honor banners to the community.
Adjutant Tim Howard alerted the Journal-Record to the proposal a few hours later, noting Sonny James Post Commander Tim Webb addressed the council during the meeting and asked for approval for the town to put the banners up during specific veteran-related holidays.
Howard explained a unanimous decision was made, with all council members approving the proposal.
Besides Howard and Webb, Sonny James Post Vice Commander Steve Bezet was also in attendance.
Hackleburg Town Clerk Carla Rector also remarked on the banners the morning after the meeting.
“American Legion officials were here to talk about the banners,” she said. “They explained they wanted to purchase the banners and the hardware to put them up on poles around town.
“We think it’s a great idea. These banners are for veterans who have passed, who are living and for those still serving.”
She said the American Legion will allow citizens, businesses or organizations to purchase a banner for a veteran, with the cost being $125 each.
“These banners will then be put up around town for Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and for Veterans Day,” she said. “The American Legion post will store the flags when they’re not being displayed.”
She also mentioned the organization will be seeking permission to temporarily display the banners on power poles until other more permanent attachments can be worked out.
She explained the banners do not need to be nailed into place, but have a bracket which can encircle a pole, post or bar without causing damage. The bracket then holds the banner.
