Gas tax

Alabama’s gasoline tax will hike another 2 cents beginning tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 1.
The increase is the second step in the state’s 10-cent Rebuild Alabama Act, which the state Legislature approved during the 2019 Legislative Session. It was the first increase to the gas tax since 1992.
The gas tax increased 6 cents in September 2019, from 18 cents per gallon to 24 cents per gallon. Tomorrow’s increase will bump it an additional 2 cents to 26 cents per gallon. Additionally, diesel tax will increase from 25 cents to 27 cents.

An upcoming gas tax increase may go virtually unnoticed due to gas prices gradually falling over the last month.
“With the prices going downward, we won’t notice it as much,” said Birmingham-based American Automobile Association (AAA) spokesperson Clay Ingram. “Having it this time of year is better than doing it in the spring when prices would already be increasing.”
Alabama’s gas will increase 6 cents beginning Sunday, Sept. 1, raising the state’s gas tax from 18 cents to 24 cents per gallon. Tax on diesel will increase from 19 cents to 25 cents per gallon.
