Arrest made after crash investigation

Rusty Clark is arrested Monday for DUI and reckless endangerment in a crash which occurred in December.

WINFIELD —Rusty Clark, 51, of Winfield, has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence and reckless endangerment after a car accident in December of last year.
According to police, tests showed that Clark’s alcohol blood level was above the legal limit at the time of the accident.  
Clark turned himself in on Monday morning, Jan. 30, and is currently being held in Marion County Jail as of press time Monday.

Winfield schools graded in top 10

WINFIELD — Winfield City Schools received a top 10 score from the Alabama State Department of Education’s 2022 A-F report card with a total district score of 92.
Report card scores are based on six areas: academic achievement, academic growth, chronic absenteeism, college and career readiness, graduation rate and progress of English proficiency.

WINFIELD — Emergency personnel responded to a house on Woodvale Avenue in Winfield on New Year’s Day after a Toyota SUV was accidentally left in gear and rolled down a steep driveway, through the wall of a house across the street.
Police said no one was in the car, but there was one person in the house who narrowly escaped injury.
Police said the occupant of the house was about to sit on his couch but changed his mind and sat on his recliner right before the vehicle came through the wall where the couch was.

Methodist Church disaffiliating

Shown is Winfield First United Methodist Church, located at 835 Bankhead Highway in Winfield. The church has voted to disaffiliate from the United Methodist Church over the issue of homosexuality. The church hasn’t formally changed its stance against the act, but the fact that it is being debated so fiercely has many members concerned.

WINFIELD — Winfield First Methodist Church and Bexar Methodist Church are both disaffiliating with the United Methodist Church over the issue of homosexuality.
The United Methodist Church at large has  been debating what the denomination’s stance on the act should be.
Many conservative members are concerned the stance could change in favor of what they believe is a sin, while those on the more liberal side think the denomination’s stance should change to be more inclusive of the LGBT community.

Two council member seats vacant

WINFIELD —  The Winfield City Council voted during its regular meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 20, to declare a vacant seat on the council.
Councilman Eddy Posey passed away on Friday, Dec. 9, leaving an open seat on the city council.
Posey was appointed to the city council in late 2021, after Rusty Barnes, who held the seat before him, had to resign after moving outside Winfield city limits. Posey ran against Barnes for the seat in the last election and lost by a slim margin, which made Posey the council’s first choice to fill that seat.

Crash under investigation

WINFIELD — Winfield City Police are investigating a crash on Highway 129 at the intersection near the new Dollar General and the old Huatulco restaurant that happened on Sunday, Dec. 18. According to Police Chief Brett Burleson, only one person was injured in the crash, the driver of the vehicle. Burleson said the accident is under investigation and that police are waiting on test results to see if the driver will be facing any charges relating to the accident.

Winfield parade is Saturday

WINFIELD — The Winfield Chamber of Commerce rescheduled the city’s annual Christmas parade from last Saturday to this Saturday, Dec. 17 at 5 p.m.
The parade was postponed Saturday morning after rain was forecast around the time the parade would start. The forecast was proven accurate as it did begin to rain around 6 p.m. on Saturday.
The tree has already been lit, but all other events will still be happening. There will be inflatables, music, childrens’ games and more beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

‘Thanks at Thanksgiving’ told by Winfield fifth grader in 1962

Mrs. Bythel Earnest, who has be substituting for Mr. Grady Dillard, who has been ill for six weeks, asked the fifth graders of Winfield City Schools to write what they are thankful for. She was so impressed by the paper turned in by Janie Lindsey that she brought, as it is written, to the Daily Northwest Alabamian for publication.

New traffic lights coming to Winfield

The new traffic lights are a result of the damage downtown Winfield suffered from a small tornado which breezed through after Christmas last year. The light poles are seen being cut out of the roadway shortly after the tornado.

WINFIELD — New traffic lights should be installed around the first week of December, barring any more delays, according to Winfield Mayor Randy Price.
Price said during a city council meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 15, that the installation of new traffic lights had been briefly delayed.
The traffic lights at the main intersection in downtown Winfield were damaged by an F1 tornado on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2021.
