HAMILTON — In the announcements segment of the Hamilton City Council’s Sept. 21 meeting, Hamilton Mayor Tami Williams reminded City of Hamilton residents that garbage exemption applications could be turned in starting Oct. 1.
The exemptions are for garbage only, allowing those who qualify to save $17 per month. Only applicants whose sole source of income is Social Security or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) are eligible.
Applications for “Social Security Exemptions” are available at the Hamilton Water Department, located inside city hall, or at the Marion County Health Department.
Those applying must complete all paperwork in full, with all requirements fulfilled in order for the application to be processed.
Requirements include:
• The water/garbage account must be in the name of the person requesting the exemption.
• Applicants must bring copies of three consecutive bank statements verifying their Social Security check is direct deposited, plus any other financial statements for CDs, retirement funds, IRAs, 401(k)s, rental income, alimony, child support, etc.
• For those not using direct deposit, other verification corresponding with bank statements is needed, such as a bank print out. Those receiving checks by mail should wait until they have verification before submitting paperwork.
• Proof of income is required for everyone living at the residence of the applicant. Social Security or SSDI must be the only income for the entire household.
• Everyone in the household drawing Social Security or SSDI must provide a Social Security Income Statement dated between Oct. 2025 and Oct. 2026.
• Applicants who file income taxes must bring a copy of their most recent filings, such as a Federal Tax Form 1040 or an equivalent.
• Applicants must read, sign and fully understand the application and affidavit before coming in, and have all of their paperwork and signature notarized beforehand.
Applicants are requested to please make sure to fulfill all requirements before coming in to the water department or health department to turn in their paperwork.
Please note, again, according to state guidelines, residents can only qualify for the garbage exemption if their only source of income for the entire household is Social Security or SSDI. There are no exceptions.
