By Luke Brantley Staff Writer BRILLIANT — The Brilliant Tigers lost 33-0 at home to the visiting Hubbertville Lions on Friday night, Oct. 8. The Brilliant defense started strong after the Lions received the opening kick off. The Lions gained six yards on a run their first play, but two sacks on second and third down sent them back. The Lions went for it on fourth down, but couldn’t get the first down. The Tigers took over on their own 25, but an incomplete pass and a fumble in the back stopped any progress down the field. The Tigers punted on fourth down. The Lions scored soon after with a run. The extra point was good, and the Lions went ahead 7-0 with 6:19 left in the first quarter. On the Lions’ next possession, they made it to the Tigers’ 23-yard line. The Lions got a runner through the middle for another touchdown. The Lions set up to kick an extra point, but instead took the snap and threw a pass to go for two, but it was no good. The Lions were now leading the Tigers 13-0. Neither team scored in the second quarter as each defense dug in, as well as they could on the muddy field. The Tigers received the kickoff to start the second half, but their first drive ended in a punt. The Lions ran from around midfield and scored another touchdown with 8:45 left in the third quarter. Leading 20-0, the Lions kicked off and the Tigers ended up on their own 14-yard line. Brilliant quarterback Wiley Hanson kept twice for short gains, but threw an interception on third down. The Lions took over on the Tigers’ 25. They ran to the 21, and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Brilliant brought them up to the 21. The Tigers stopped a run on the one-yard line, but the next run got through. With a successful extra point kick, the Lions were leading 27-0 with 6:21 left in the third quarter. A few minutes later, they scored again but missed the extra point. The Lions were leading 33-0 as the third quarter came to a close. The Tigers made a strong drive to open the fourth quarter, but the Lions took over on downs on Brilliant’s 35. The Lions made a short gain on first down. On second down, the Hubbertville runner fumbled the ball, which was recovered by Brilliant’s Morgan Jones, who ran the ball back across midfield and all the way to the Hubbertville 37-yard line. The Tigers fought to put points on the board with a few minutes left in the game. But on fourth and long with less than two minutes left, a pass hit the field incomplete and the Lions took over on downs. Hubbertville ran down the clock, and ended the game with a 33-0 victory over Brilliant. Brilliant plays again at home on Friday, Oct. 15, against Berry at 7 p.m.
