FLORENCE — The Phillips Bears defeated the Shoals Christian Flame 29-14 at Florence on Friday night, Sept. 20.
Shoals Christian scored in their opening drive and got the extra point through the uprights to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
Phillips responded by scoring on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Chase Burton to Trey Tidwell with two seconds left in the first quarter. The Bears failed to get the 2-point conversion and were trailing 7-6 going into the second quarter.
During the second quarter, the Bears scored on a 50-yard touchdown pass to Tidwell again, but this time, the Bears were able to convert 2 more thanks to a catch by Brayden Ricketts to take a 14-7 lead.
In the third quarter, Burton rushed with the ball to score another Bears touchdown. With another 2 points on a reception by Ricketts, the Bears were ahead 22-7.
The Flame would score again in the third quarter and hit the extra point, but they were still trailing 22-14.
The Bears would score one final touchdown in the fourth quarter on a reception from Tidwell for 63 yards. The extra point was good, and the Bears would end the game with a 29-14 victory over the flame.
The victory against Shoals Christian marks Phillips’ first victory of the 2024 football season, after three losses against Marion County, Meek and Vina.
The Bears now hold an overall record of 1-3 and are 1-2 in region play.
Next week, the Phillips Bears will travel to Brilliant to play the Tigers in their homecoming game on Friday night, Sept. 27.
