Sulligent upsets Marion County’s first season game

GUIN — The Sulligent Blue Devils came to Guin Friday, Aug. 23, and gave the
Marion County High School Red Raiders a 42-22 loss for their first season game.
Marion County won the toss but deferred to the second half. Within the first few minutes of the game, Sulligent’s Haigen Gann crossed the goal line for their first touchdown, followed by a good 2 point conversion, lighting up the scoreboard 8-0.
When Marion County got the ball, they ended up giving the downs back to Sulligent. A complete pass to Sulligent’s Charles Long gave them the second touchdown. A good pass to Andrew Lowe gave another good 2 points, making it 16-0, Sulligent.
Sulligent’s Johnwil Spruiel was able to intercept the ball on second down. As Sulligent edged up the field, Gann was able to rush 45 yards for another touchdown. This time, the 2 point conversion was no good, ending the first quarter at 22-0, Sulligent.
Marion County was able to score at the beginning of the second quarter, the ball carried by Samuel Taylor, after a 57-yard drive. The PAT was good, with a score of 22-7, Sulligent.
Gann answered with another touchdown of his own however, and with another good 2 point conversion, the score went to 30-7, Sulligent.
Marion County was forced to punt on the next set of downs, and Gann took the opportunity once again for a touchdown, running for 70 yards. The 2 point try was no good, but that still left Sulligent well into the lead at 36-7.
As Marion County began working toward the end zone, Spruiel caught an interception, but the clock ran out before they could do anything with it.
No points were scored during the third quarter, though the action continued with Sulligent recovering a Marion County fumble, only for the Red Raider defense to force a turnover on downs. Then Sulligent sacked Quarterback Tye Madison in the backfield on first down after the turnover.
Sulligent was able to cover 51 yards, but Marion County’s defense stopped them at the end zone at the beginning of the last quarter. Madison was able to take the ball from their own 1-yard line to Sulligent’s 25 yard line, but the downs were turned over before a touchdown could happen.
A fumble let Marion County’s Ty Hollis take the ball for a touchdown, with a good 2 points by O’Marion Smith, bringing the score 36-15, Sulligent.
Sulligent’s Landin Pace was able to take the ball to the end zone on third down. A failed 2 point conversion ended the scoring for Sulligent at 42-15.
Marion County worked 49 yards before Desmond Smith received the last touchdown on the night. A good PAT ended the scoring at 42-22, Sulligent.
Marion County will host Phillips this Friday night, while Sulligent hosts Winfield.
