Lady Tigers crush Lady Red Devils 70-31

Brilliant’s Hadlee Sanderson was recognized by the AHSAA for 15 season double-doubles.

VINA — The Brilliant Tigers varsity boys’ and girls’ basketball teams traveled to Vina on Thursday night, Jan. 10, to play the Red Devils before the winter weather arrived the next day.
The Lady Tigers hit the ground running, scoring 25 points in the first quarter and another 20 in the second quarter. At the end of the game, they’d held the Lady Red Devils to 31 points while scoring 70 of their own.
Macy Moore and Hadlee Sanderson led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 22 points each. Brooke O’Mary scored 16 points, Karagan Stanford scored 9 points and Laine Johnson scored one point.
Brilliant’s boys’ team didn’t have the same fortune. At half time, the Tigers were behind 35-19. The Tigers played hard, but the Red Devils were able to maintain the lead through the second half, winning the game 65-42.
No stats were available for the boys’ game.

Sanderson Spotlight
Hadlee Sanderson was spotlighted by the Alabama High School Athletics Association for racking up 15 double-doubles over 17 games this season.
A double-double is when a player earns double-digit totals in two stat categories, such as points scored and rebounds.
In the Lady Tigers’ game against Meek on Jan. 3, she scored 34 points and grabbed 17 rebounds.
Before the game at Vina, her career total reached 1,701 points and 1,014 rebounds.
The AHSAA’s spotlight also recognized Sanderson for setting a new school record for the most points scored in a single game when she scored 46 points against the Hubbertville Lady Lions during the NAC tournament on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2024.
According to the AHSAA, she is averaging 23.2 points and 13.2 rebounds per game.
The AHSAA said her accomplishments have been made all the more impressive by the difficulties she is facing off the court, as well.
“Her mother was diagnosed and has been receiving treatment for cancer,” Robert Mallory told the AHSAA. “She has stepped in trying to help her father and her coach. During these stressful times, you rarely see Hadlee without a pleasant smile and a polite demeanor and is still keeping her 4.0 grade-point average in the classroom.”
The AHSAA’s spotlight of Sanderson said she was chosen over other strong contenders, like Hoover’s Ailiyah Blanchard, Hazel Green’s Sloan Williams and Ace Austin from Spring Garden.
For this weeks’ schedule, the Tigers played the Hackleburg Panthers last night, and will play the Marion County Red Raiders on Friday night in Guin.
