VINA — Phillips broke their unlucky streak to come away with their first win of the season at Vina’s homecoming Friday, Oct. 6. They scored 14 points to shut out Vina with 0 points.
The Bears kicked off to Vina to start the game and traded possession of the ball throughout the first, second and third quarters without either team scoring.
It wasn’t until the fourth quarter when Phillips turned on the heat. The quarter began with Phillips at first and 10 at Vina’s 37 yard line. Three first downs later saw Phillips at second and goal on the four yard line. After a 68 yard drive, Phillips’ Hayden Dees got the honor of the first touchdown with 9:03 left in the game. The two point try was no good, with Phillips at 6-0.
With 5:13 left, it was Brayden Jordan up the middle for his touchdown. Jordan then took in a good two point conversion, finalizing the score at 14-0, Phillips.
With seconds remaining on the clock, Phillips was almost able to get another touchdown, but the clock wound down.
Phillips will travel to Hackleburg this Friday night. The Vina Red Devils will play Cherokee at home.
