Pikeville - Animal service non-profit Hoof or Paw is making strides towards establishing a no-kill animal shelter to serve the Marion County area.
Ground was broken on Tuesday, June 15, at a five-acre lot recently acquired by Hoof or Paw from the Marion County Commission, which donated the land to support the organization. Aycock Dozer and Track Hoe of Hamilton conducted the work pro bono for the organization.
The same parcel of land had previously been committed to the Marion County Humane Society for an animal shelter but lack of support meant that the project never developed.
The site will initially be used to house and care for dogs. Hoof or Paw founder Calen Weston says she has plans to expand these services to cats and livestock and large animals in the future as resources are made available.
