Pirates clinch playoff spot

VINEMONT - The Winfield Pirates overcame a slow start offensively and held off a late rally from the Vinemont Eagles in the second half for a 28-18 win on Friday, Oct. 2, at Vinemont. The win improved Winfield to 6-1 on the season and 4-0 in Class 3A, Region 6, and clinched a playoff berth in the process.
Vinemont used a steady running game and played power football to overpower the Pirates to begin the game and take a 6-0 lead on the opening possession. Winfield finally got on the board late in the second quarter and added more in the third to pull away to a 28-6 lead. Vinemont was able to score and recover an onside kick and score once more to cut the lead to 28-18, but the Pirates were able to gain possession on the last onside attempt and iced the game away.
"Vinemont was very physical," said Winfield head coach David McKinney in an interview following the game. "They had a ton of breaks go against them all year long. I knew they would be a possible team to beat us with their size."
"We are very fortunate to come away with a victory and my hats off to them," McKinney said.
