Roger Lee Mays
Roger Lee Mays, 80, Hamilton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 3, 2020, in his home surrounded by loving family.
Mr. Mays was born on March 1, 1940, in Hamilton to Lee and Bessie Mays. He graduated from Hamilton High School in 1958 and attended college at Florence State (what is now the University of North Alabama).
He moved to Atlanta, Ga., where he met the love of his life, Jane Borom Mays, in 1962 and they were wed in 1963. Over the course of the nearly six decades they, together, built a wonderful, close-nit family that stands strong today.
In the early 60s, Mr. Mays went to work for General Electric and built a career there. In the early 80s his home town called him and he responded. He left his corporate life and relocated his family to Hamilton where he owned his own business, appreciated his community and continued to raise their two children, Dede and Greg.
The support and love they received from their father led the way as they grew to join their own spouses and raise their own families.
Mr. Mays was a loving husband, a caring family man and mentor to his children as they forged forward in their own lives. Roger was a Christian man and a servant-leader to his family and community. He was one who paid attention to detail in caring for his family.
One of the unique attributes of Mr. Mays is that he was a hot air balloon pilot and one of the founding members of the Georgia Balloon Association. He also enjoyed traveling regardless if it was across the state or across the world, he enjoyed experiencing both new and familiar places with his family.
He is survived by his beautiful bride of 57 years - Jane Mays; his two children - Dede Mays (Jeff) Simmons, Florence, and Greg (Tabitha) Mays, Minneapolis, Minn.; five grandchildren - Leslie Simmons (Jay) Hayes, Allie Simmons, John David Simmons, Jeffrey Mays and Kristin Mays; two wonderful great-grandchildren - Liam James Hayes and Cyprus Jeffery Hayes; a sister - Faye Catherine (Kay) Claybrook; and two nieces - Robin Claybrook (Rusty) Lynn and Cindy Claybrook (Phillip) Dobbins, all of Birmingham.
A celebration of life service is planned to occur in Hamilton later in the year to honor this great husband, father, grandfather and friend. The family has requested the community not provide flowers but instead make a donation to Hamilton First Baptist Church in honor of Mr. Mays.
The family is thankful for the outpouring of love they have received from friends during this difficult time.
