HAMILTON — For four hours on Tuesday, Sept. 16, Hamilton High School students and staff, along with law enforcement, reacted to the discovery of a 9mm cartridge found by a faculty member on a classroom floor.
The call came into the police station at 10 a.m., with HHS Principal David Cantrell notifying Hamilton Police Chief Jordan Carter, who had officers onsite immediately afterward.
Cantrell also alerted the public to the situation via a Facebook message, although, with the full situation being unknown and under investigation, he was not able to share the level of threat at that time.
Approximately 45 minutes later, Carter, after a thorough preliminary assessment, was able to share more on social media about the specific issue, so as to reassure parents and the public.
The chief referenced the “unspent 9mm round of ammunition,” noting, “at this time, there is no indication of an immediate threat to students or staff.”
The all-clear went out at 2 p.m.
We asked the chief to share some of what happened at the school in those four hours. He explained numerous law enforcement actions were taking place simultaneously.
