Lady Aggies fall to rivals Haleyville

HALEYVILLE — It was a battle to the finish, but the Lady Lions of Haleyville were able to hold off a charge by the Hamilton Aggies to claim an 8-7 victory Wednesday, April 12.
Hamilton was the first team to cross home plate, with Tesney Peoples doing the honors in the top of the first inning. Haleyville came roaring back in the bottom of the inning, with Maddie Wilson getting a home run on a fly ball to left field, bringing Hope Swims and Abby Tidwell home with her and giving the Lady Lions a 3-1 lead.
Haleyville added to their lead in the second, with Maegan McCullar and Evelyn Kate Carroll both getting runs to make it 5-1, Haleyville.
A single to right field by Maggie Harbor was enough to bring Emily Jones across for the Aggies in the top of the third, narrowing Haleyville’s lead to 5-2. But Maddie Wilson had another home run in her, sending the ball flying to center field and putting the Lady Lions up 6-2.  
The Aggies came back with a vengeance in the top of the fourth.  Aubrey Sorrells was the first one up to bat, and she hit a beauty into center field for a home run.  Ella Kelley was brought home on a single by Brilyn Gilstrap, then Jessica Shotts doubled on the next play, bringing Hope Smith across, narrowing Haleyville’s lead to 6-5.
Courtesy runner Kate Wilson, in for Adyson Fralix, scored in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-5, then Brylee Henderson scored Haleyville’s last run for the day in the bottom of the sixth, making it 8-5.  Sorrells got another home run in the top of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough, and Haleyville got the 8-7 win.
Fralix was on the mound for the majority of the game for Haleyville, striking out 2 and allowing 16 hits for 7 seven runs.
Michaela Otts was on the mound for Hamilton, striking out 2 and allowing 7 hits for 5 runs.  Kelley had been on the mound early in the game, allowing 1 hit for 3 runs.
Maddie Wilson was Haleyville’s leading scorer for the day, with 2 runs and 4 RBI.  Swims and Carroll each had 1 run and 1 RBI; Tidwell, McCullar and Henderson each had 1 run and Lilly Rae Rushing and Savannah Fralix each had 1 RBI.
Sorrells was Hamilton’s leading scorer, with 2 runs and 3 RBI.  Jones, Kelley, Smith, Peoples and Ella Bartlett each had 1 run. Shotts had 2 RBI and Gilstrap and Harbor each had 1 RBI.
