WINFIELD — Winfield City Schools have brought in Sergeant Steve Thompson of the Winfield City Police Department as a school resource officer.
Last year, the city and the board of education agreed to partner up to pay for two new officers, with the school and city each paying one’s salary.
The initial system involved regular officers rotating between the schools during the day, but now Winfield schools have a dedicated SRO.
“We had been in talks about it for the last three or four years about the importance of having an officer here,” Winfield Police Chief Brett Burleson said. “Most of the time while I’ve been chief, we’ve rotated our day shift officers to where there wasn’t one on campus the whole time, but we would have officers who would stop by periodically throughout the day. That included me and my investigators, as well.
