Marion County escapee captured in Haleyville

HALEYVILLE — A man wanted on escape charges from Marion County was in the wrong place at the wrong time on Wednesday, Feb. 1, in Haleyville.
Arrested during a traffic stop on Highway 13 at 18th Street in Haleyville was Ashley Dewayne Pipkins, 46, of Haleyville, who has been charged with  trafficking methamphetamine (possessing 28 grams or greater) and possession of marijuana second degree, according to Haleyville Police Investigator Lt. Eddie Collins.

Hester Bowley turns 100.

HALEYVILLE — Hester Bowley, of Haleyville, celebrated her 100th birthday on Thursday, Dec. 22.
The vast majority of her first hundred years have been filled by hard work and caring for others.
Hester was born in Marion County in 1922 to Floyd and Carrie Reynolds. Floyd was a native of Marion County, and Carrie, née Hand, was from Georgia. Hester was the second oldest of twelve children, nine girls and three boys.

Heavy rain collapses County Highway 48

HALEYVILLE — A portion of Marion County Highway 48 collapsed Tuesday night, March 22.
Dale Holt, Marion County commissioner for District 3, reported that an old metal culvert in place since 1952 underneath County Highway 48 which connects highways 129 and 241 in the eastern portion of Marion County had deteriorated, causing a portion of the westbound lane of 48 to collapse.  The collapsed section of road is approximately 18 feet wide and 30-35 feet deep.
