Guin Mayor Phil Segraves officially announced his plans to the Journal-Record on Aug. 20 to run for the Alabama House of Representatives District 17.
GUIN — Guin Mayor Phil Segraves announced last week he intends to seek the Republican Party’s nomination for District 17 of the Alabama House of Representatives.
“I’m excited to continue my work to grow the economy of northwest Alabama,” Segraves said. “I’ve built my career around bringing investment to our communities, and I’ll keep fighting to bring good-paying jobs and economic development to Marion and Lamar counties, and the City of Haleyville, in Winston County.”
Segraves has a long resume of leadership roles and economic development work. He was elected to the Guin City Council, and then served five terms as mayor of Guin. He held positions or currently serves on the Guin Park and Recreation Board, the Northwest Alabama Council of Local Governments (NACOLG) and is a board member of the Northwest Alabama Gas Board. Segraves also served as president of the Alabama League of Municipalities.
“As a member of the Alabama Legislature, I’ll continue to focus on rural economic development, but I’ll also make sure our schools, K-12, two-year and technical schools, are well funded,” Segraves added.
“I promise voters I will always stand up for conservative principles, and I’ll be a leader at the statehouse on keeping taxes low.”
As mayor of Guin, Segraves led the effort to extend the city limits to Interstate 22. Through public and private partnerships, he secured funding for infrastructure projects, bringing water, sewer, natural gas, electricity and broadband internet to the I-22 corridor, which eventually attracted a full service 101 room Holiday Inn hotel at exit 26. This development created 54 new jobs for the area.
Segraves then collaborated with other area officials to build the first electric vehicle supercharging station on I-22 on the hotel property.
“Now thousands of people stop in Guin, Alabama, to eat a meal, stay in our award-winning hotel and charge their electric vehicle as they travel across our nation,” Segraves stated.
“I’m very proud of the collaboration between governments, developers and our utility partners.”
The Republican Primary Election is scheduled for May 19, 2026.
