WINFIELD — A man walking down U.S. Highway 43 was struck and killed by a vehicle on Tuesday night, Oct. 31.
Brian Keith Alexander, 42, of Hubbertville, was walking near the intersection of Highway 43 and County Road 4, also known as Three-Bridge Bottom, when he was hit by a vehicle.
Winfield police, along with the Winfield Fire Department, Marion County EMA and the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, responded to the accident.
Winfield Police Chief Brett Burleson said police received several reports that night from concerned drivers of a man walking down the side of the highway after dark.
“A little before 7:15, we got a call of a man walking down the road,” Burleson said. “Probably a minute, two at the most, after that, we got another call that the subject was now laying in the road. The guys got there on scene and started CPR, but when Assistant Chief Gary Hamlett got on scene, the subject was obviously deceased, and there was nothing we could do.”
Burleson said the incident is still under investigation.
“We’re not real sure why he was walking in the road at the time, but there were numerous calls that came in around that time,” he said. “Calls were still coming in about folks nearly hitting him.”
The driver who did hit him didn’t realize what it was she had hit at first.
“A female driver with a child in the car didn’t know what she hit,” Burleson said. “She knew that it scared her, because it caused a good bit of damage to the vehicle.”
Burleson said the driver will not be facing any charges, and her name has not been released. He also expressed his thanks for all those who stopped to help.
