WEST POINT — After returning from their annual spring trip to play in the Gulf Coast Classic Tournament in Gulf Shores, the Winfield Pirates once again took to the road to take on the West Point Warriors in Cullman on Friday, March 24.
Winfield got out to an early lead by scoring 2 runs in the first on back-to-back singles by Hayden Ballard and Jarrett Hosch followed by a sacrifice fly by Tyler Mays.
West Point responded with 4 runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Not to be outdone, the Pirates got back to work in the 2nd with four straight hits. A Spencer Haney single was followed by a Blaine Bowen double and another single off the bat of Brady May. The big blow, however, came on a Hayden Ballard triple. All told, the Pirates plated 4 runs in the second to reclaim the lead.
That would prove to be all pitcher J.D. Ray would need as he proceeded to pitch 5 scoreless innings in relief.
The Pirates tacked on three more runs in the 6th highlighted by a Hosch triple.
West Point would add a late run in the 7th to bring the final score to 9-5 in favor of the Pirates.
The win brings Winfield’s record to 11-9 on the season with area play right around the corner.
