BIRMINGHAM — The Hamilton Aggies boys’ indoor track and field team won the 2025 4A-5A State Indoor Meet on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
The Aggies had several good finishes in multiple events that led to their victory.
The Aggies won the meet with 65 points, beating Scottsboro with 53 points and Ramsay with 40 points.
Hamilton’s Mason Holloway placed second in the boys’ long jump with a total mark of 20 feet, 10.75 inches.
In boys’ pole vault, Elijah Robinson placed second with a total mark of 13 feet, 6 inches.
Hayden Ables won the boys’ 400-meter dash with a time of 50.15 seconds. He also placed fifth in the boys’ 60m hurdles.
Joshua Webb placed fifth in the boys’ 800 in 1:58.79. In the boys’ 1600, Webb placed second in 4:29.91. Webb rounded out the distance running events with a third place finish in the 3200 in 9:59.61.
The Aggies placed fourth in the 4x800 relay with a total time of 8:35.21.
Head Coach Scotty Sanderson said indoor track season is different from outdoor track in terms of how the meets function.
“The season for indoor is a little different than what you would find for outdoor, because you only have five meets,” Sanderson said. “Everything is in Birmingham at the CrossPlex, and all five of those meets are qualifying meets.
“So, you have no team champions when you go to these meets. They have individuals and give a medal to the top 6 people in each event. But you’re competing against every classification, and there are teams from Georgia and Mississippi that come over because they don’t have indoor seasons over there, so they can come and compete, but they don’t compete in our state championship.”
Sanderson also said the Aggies won the state championship in an odd way.
“To win this state championship, it was kind of unusual,” he said. “We only had one person win a state championship, and that was Hayden Ables in the 400. We scored high in a lot of other events, which was big. In track, you don’t have to win events. You just have to score high.”
Sanderson said the boys’ team was fairly young this year.
“As far as the kids that scored a lot for us, Hayden Ables is a senior, and we had one pole vaulter who’s a senior. So really just the two seniors, and we’ll have most people back for next year.”
He also added he’ll have all of the same athletes back for outdoor season.
This state championship marks the third-in-a-row after the Aggies won the outdoor state meet last year and the cross country state meet this past season.
The Lady Aggies placed fourth overall in the state meet with 32 points, just missing the podium to Scottsboro (41 points), Whitesburg (45) and Bayside (61).
Kyra Casey placed second in girls’ long jump with a total mark of 17 feet, 2.5 inches. Casey also placed second in triple jump with a mark of 35 feet, 1 inch. She also placed fourth in the 60m dash in 8.02 seconds.
Hamilton’s girls placed seventh in the 4x200, sixth in the 4x400 and fifth in the 4x800.
Sanderson also said between the boys and girls, the Aggies set a total of 14 new school records this season.
Winfield and Marion County also competed in the state meet.
The Winfield Lady Pirates placed eighth overall with 27 points in the 1A-3A girls’ meet.
Audrey Spillers finished in 13th in the 400 and seventh in the 800. She also placed ninth in the 1600, followed by Audrey Patton in 11th place.
