WINFIELD — The Winfield Pirates are the 2022 West Alabama Conference (WAC) champions after a 65-60 victory over the Sulligent Blue Devils on Monday, Dec. 19.
The Pirates defeated the South Lamar Stallions 65-33 in the first round on Saturday, Dec. 17, and advanced to the final round on Monday.
The game was a close, back and forth battle until the very end.

Pirates score 25 unanswered points to upend Fayette County

FAYETTE — The Winfield Pirates won the 600th game in school history with a 25-13 come from behind win over the Fayette County Tigers on Friday, Oct. 14 in Fayette.
The win improved Winfield to 7-1 on the season and 4-1 in Class 3A, Region 5, and also clinched a playoff berth.
Winfield trailed 13-0 going into the second quarter when the Pirates rolled off 25 unanswered points and held the Tigers out of the end zone the rest of the night to secure the region win.

Pirates sail to homecoming win over Carbon Hill

WINFIELD — The Winfield Pirates sailed to a 62-0 homecoming win over the Carbon Hill Bulldogs on Friday, Oct. 7, in Winfield.
The Pirates jumped out to a big lead at the half and used its stout defense to hold the Bulldogs out of the end zone for its third consecutive shutout, and also third on the season.

TARRANT — The Winfield Pirates used a balanced attack totaling 295 yards with 148 passing and 147 rushing to defeat the Tarrant Wildcats by a score of 43-0, on Friday, Sep. 30, in Tarrant.
Winfield scored on its first three plays of the game, a 60 yard run, 37 yard pass and a 40 yard run.
The Pirates defense turned in another stellar performance with its second consecutive shutout, and only giving up 73 total yards to the Wildcats and even picked up a safety early in the game.

Pirates pick up first region win over Midfield

WINFIELD — After an open week the Winfield Pirates got back to playing football again, and took care of business with a 56-8 route of the Midfield Patriots in a Class 3A, Region 5 game on Friday, Sep. 16, in Winfield. The win gave the Pirates its first region win of the 2022 season.
The Pirates got off to a fast start rolling up 28 first quarter points and cruised out to a 49-0 halftime lead.
Winfield running back Drew Cook paced the Pirates scoring 4 rushing touchdowns in the first half.

Second ranked Pirates’ fall in thriller at Gordo

GORDO — Class 3A’s second ranked Winfield Pirates fell in a shootout thriller to the Gordo Greenwave 49-42 on Friday, Sept. 2 at Gordo.
In what looked like a heavyweight boxing match the Greenwave landed the early blows going ahead 13-0, before the Pirates countered with two scores to take a 14-13 lead. Both teams traded scores until the Greenwave landed the knockout blow with just 48 seconds left in the game to steal the victory.

HALEYVILLE — It was a 3-to-1 match victory for the Haleyville Lady Lions volleyball team Monday, Aug. 29, against the Winfield Lady Pirates.
The match was played at the Haleyville Middle School gym, with HHS taking the first and second sets, 25-17, 25-16. The Lady Pirates won 25-21 in the third, and the Lady Lions closed it out in the fourth 25-19.

Pirates take win over Sumiton Christian

The Winfield Pirates were victorious over Sumiton Christian, 6-2 Tuesday, April 19.
Brady May earned the win for Winfield. May lasted two innings, allowing two hits and zero runs while striking out one and walking one. John David Ray, Jarett Hosch and Spencer Haney all put in work in relief out of the bullpen, steering their team towards the victory.
Braden Woodard took the loss for Sumiton Christian. The pitcher surrendered two runs on four hits over one and two-thirds innings, walking one.
Tyler Ingle started the game for Sumiton Christian.

Pirates defeat Haleyville despite allowing a three-run inning

The Winfield Pirates weathered a scare by Haleyville in the seventh inning where Winfield coughed up three runs, but the Pirates  still won 8-5 on Saturday, April 9. The big inning for Haleyville came thanks to a triple by Bo Mitchell, a single by Grant Wakefield, and a double by Brody Gravitt.
Winfield got things moving in the first inning, when Hunter Busha reached on a dropped third strike.
Winfield notched three runs in the third inning. Tyler Mays and Davis Bowen all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.
