HACKLEBURG — His goal is to train to make the U20 Canadian National World team that will compete in the World Athletics Championship in Oregon in 2026. He has many accolades. He is ranked number one in shot put, number one in hammer and number one in weight in the State of Alabama going into the 2025 track season. He is also just 17.
Luke Herring is the son of Kevin and Jody Herring of Spruce Pine, and is a senior at Hackleburg High School. He signed a track and field scholarship to the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Ark., in a ceremony at Hackleburg High on Wednesday, Dec. 4.
“Luke’s played baseball, and then he started to really get involved in throwing in track and field,” HHS Principal Trey George said. “We brought the program back when he was in eighth grade. He’s really helped to bring that program up.”
Luke has been coached by his mother, Jody Herring, along with facilitator Adam McCarley, and he began throwing in 2021 for the school. He has also been coached by Gabor Mate (shot-ofdiscus.com) and Sean Doucette (Hamilton Olympic Club in Ontario, Canada).
