Pirates win close in-county games

The Winfield Pirates boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams defeated the Marion County Red Raiders and the Hamilton Aggies on the road last week in four hard-fought games on Tuesday, Dec. 3, and Friday, Dec. 6.
On Tuesday, the Lady Pirates won a nail biter against the Lady Raiders.
Marion County went up 19-9 in the first quarter.
The Lady Pirates scored 20 more in the second quarter to the Lady Raiders’ 14, leaving the score at 33-29 in Marion County’s favor at the half.
The Lady Pirates stayed in the fight in the third quarter, which ended with the Lady Raiders still leading 49-46.
But in the fourth quarter, the Lady Pirates scored 20 more points to the Lady Raiders’ 16 and won the game by a single point: 66-65.
Winfield’s Kennah Beth Lacy scored 26 points and made three assists. Julie Anderson scored 17 points and made 12 rebounds.
For the Lady Red Raiders, Bekah Junkin scored 17 points and made 4 rebounds. Zella Williams scored 15 points. Lily Robinson and Alecia Donaldson each scored 11 points.
The boys’ game was also a close one. In a similar turn of events, the Raiders were leading 19-9 at the end of the first period.
At the end of the first half, the Raiders were still leading 36-19. But the Pirates came out of the locker room swinging, racking up 19 points in the third quarter to the Raiders’ 7.
The Pirates kept up the pace, scoring 22 more points in the fourth quarter to the Raiders’ 14 to win the game 60-57.
Winfield’s Sean Wyers scored 23 points and made 9 rebounds and 1 assist. Slate Gilbert scored 20 points and made 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals, along with one block.
Marion County’s Tye Madison scored 18 points and made 7 rebounds. Kade Quinn scored 11 points and made 3 rebounds. Ty Hollis and Phillip Wilson scored 9 points each.
On Friday, the Pirates played another in-county rivalry game against the Hamilton Aggies.
The first quarter was a close one in the girls’ game, with the Lady Pirates holding a one-point lead at 18-17 at the end of the first quarter.
At the half, the Lady Pirates were behind one point 29-28. At the end of the third quarter, the score was 45-43 in the Lady Pirates’ favor.
The Lady Pirates gained a little bit more breathing room in the fourth quarter to win the game 64-56.
Anderson scored the most points for the Lady Pirates with 22, along with 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Lacy scored 21 points and made 22 rebounds and 1 assist.
Hamilton’s Emily Jones scored 19 points and made 13 rebounds. Jordan Parker scored 16 points and made 4 rebounds.
The boys’ game also started with a one-point difference in the first quarter, with the Aggies leading 17-16. The Pirates scored 11 points in the second quarter to the Aggies’ 6, retaking the lead 27-23.
The Pirates scored 13 points in the third quarter to the Aggies’ 9, maintaining the lead at 40-32. The Aggies started to pick up steam in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Pirates 26-24.
But it wouldn’t be enough to make the comeback, and the Pirates won 64-58.
Gilbert scored 30 points for the Pirates, along with 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal.
Wyers scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and 1 steal.
For the Aggies, Mason Holloway scored 20 points and grabbed 3 rebounds. Kelton Battle scored 14 points and made 5 rebounds.
The Pirates also played at Red Bay on Thursday, Dec. 5. The boys lost 61-59, but the girls won 45-37.
Other scores from last week include:
- The Brilliant Lady Tigers grounded the Sumiton Christian Lady Eagles 81-14 and defeated the Phillips She-Bears 75-37. They also beat the Hubbertville Lady Lions 56-32;
- Brilliant’s boys lost to Sumiton Christian 99-20, to Phillips 71-28, and to Hubbertville 69-34;
- The Hackleburg Lady Panthers beat Lynn 57-28 and Hubbertville 51-30. The boys’ varsity team beat Lynn 61-46 but lost to Hubbertville 65-37;
- Aside from the Brilliant game, the Phillips She-Bears beat Vina 68-50 and lost to Fayette County 69-54. Phillips’ boys also lost to Fayette 65-46.
