Marion County records first COVID-19 death

Marion County has reported its first death due to COVID-19.

The first confirmed case of coronavirus in the county was reported on Saturday, March 21. According to the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH), there are now 11 cases countywide.

Statewide, there are now 34 reported deaths and 21 confirmed deaths due to coronavirus. ADPH says there are 1,336 confirmed cases in Alabama with 9,560 tests administered.

Marion County Coroner Glinda Cochran told the Journal Record she and Marion County Emergency Management Director Eric Terrell are working together to provide the public with additional information. No official report is available at this time.

According to North Mississippi Health Services (NMHS) Public Relations officer Genie Bruce, as of Friday, April 3, systemwide positive cases for COVID-19 are now at 69.

NMHS operates North Mississippi Medical Centers in Hamilton and Tupelo, Amory, Eupora, Iuka, Pontotoc and West Point, Mississippi.

Bruce said 21 of the COVID-19-positive patients are inpatients, while 48 others are outpatients. The system has administered 1,036 tests and has 229 results still pending.

NMMC-Hamilton announced on Wednesday, April 1, that the Hamilton Primary Care Center providers are now temporarily seeing patients at the old clinic building located next to the hospital to avoid the spread of COVID-19 to patients. Northwest Medical Center (NWMC) Marketing Manager Bob Robertson reported that as of April 3, NWMC in Winfield has administered 67 tests with four confirmed cases of coronavirus.
