Shelby opposes Lindh’s early release

WASHINGTON, D.C. -                
In the aftermath of the news that the American Taliban, John Walker Lindh, would be released from prison early, U.S. Senator Richard Shelby sent out a tweet on April 1 stating that he had spoken with President Donald Trump regarding the matter.
“He stated that he supports my call for Lindh to serve his full sentence. Lindh’s activities are deserving of a strong and strict punishment. Thank you, Mr. President,” Shelby said in the tweet.
Lindh was a prisoner at the Qali-I-Jangi fortress where Winfield native Johnny Micheal Spann was killed on Nov. 25, 2001, after a prison uprising. Lindh and about 500 other Taliban fighters were being held at the prison by Northern Alliance soldiers when the uprising took place. Spann, a Marine and member of the Central Intelligence Agency’s Special Activities Division, interviewed Lindh, who knew about the planned uprising, before Spann was killed by Taliban fighters.
