Sewell building sold

WINFIELD - The Winfield City Council approved a motion to sell the old downtown Sewell building during its meeting on Tuesday, June 22. The building, located just across State Highway 253 from city hall, is owned by the city but is not currently being used. The building was previously owned by Northwest Medical Center and was donated to the city several years ago. According to city clerk Angie Oliver, the building has several issues due to the age of the building, and the council has been undecided on how to handle the issue until now.

ALEA launches CodeRED system

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) has launched a new high-speed notification system known as CodeRED, designed to notify residents of missing person alerts throughout the state.
ALEA unveiled the new system on Tuesday, May 25, to highlight National Missing Children’s Day.
“Our Alabama Fusion Center (AFC) will use the new state-of-the-art system to issue alerts in the event of a missing person and it will have the capability to quickly deliver essential information to citizens throughout the state or in a targeted area, depending on the situation,” Gov. Kay Ivey said.

Privatization of ABC Stores Fails Again

Alcohol was on the minds of many Alabama lawmakers this year as the legislature considered an abnormally high number of alcohol-related bills. Several of the bills passed.
Most notable was legislation that made it possible for Alabama businesses to deliver beer, wine and liquor to customers’ homes, and separate legislation that allows state residents to order wine directly from wineries, even if those producers are out of state.

COVID-19 emergency conditions ended

HAMILTON – A year-and-a-half-old emergency declaration for the COVID-19 pandemic has officially ended in Marion County.
The Marion County Commissioners unanimously ended the local orders on Monday, June 21, formally acknowledging that emergency conditions declared in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 virus no long exist throughout the county.
Commission attorney Scott Hunt told the council that the county’s emergency orders technically end with the State of Alabama’s order.

Kids and Kin program dates set

HAMILTON - The Family Guidance Center of Alabama will be offering the Kids and Kin Program to Marion County residents this year at the Clyde Nix Public Library in Hamilton.
The program is a free statewide program to provide support and assistance for grandparents, aunts, uncles and older siblings who provide child care for their relatives’ children.

Honors students named for Athens State University Spring 2021

ATHENS – Athens State University has announced the students who have been named to the President’s List and Provost’s List for the Spring 2021 semester.
Local students include:
Emma Culp, Guin, President’s List; Hannah Palmer, Guin, President’s List; Briana Holcomb, Hamilton, Provost’s List; Addison Skinner, Hamilton, President’s List; and Shelby Reese, Winfield, President’s List.

All-state softball players named

The Alabama Sports Writers  Association (ASWA) released its All-State teams on Sunday morning, June 13.
The 2021 ASWS All-State softball teams feature the best players in each of eight classes.
The All-State team is compiled through submissions from coaches to sports writers in their area and voted on by the ASWA prep committee. A pitcher, hitter, player and coach of the year is then selected in each class.

By Scott Johnson General Manager TUPELO, MISS - Hamilton athlete Jamie Colburn, 17, a recent Hamilton High School graduate, lost his first competitive boxing match on June 12. But Colburn says he’s eager to get back inside the ring. Colburn faced off with a seasoned amateur boxer, Elijah Williams of Tupelo, in the TCB Fights BIG Time Boxing night, held at the Tupelo Furniture Market, which coincided with the city annual Elvis Festival. I-Deal Boxing Trainer Cody Harris said Colburn held his own in the first of three rounds.

The Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA) released its 2021 all-state teams on Sunday morning, June 13. The All-State team is compiled through submissions from coaches to sportswriters in their area and voted on by the ASWA prep committee. A pitcher, hitter, player and coach of the year is then selected in each class.

Substitute teachers needed

By Scott Johnson General Manager HAMILTON - Substitute teachers were in short supply during the COVID-19 pandemic. There will be two opportunities to sign up as a substitute teacher with the Marion County School System throughout the next year. The Marion County Board of Education will be signing up new substitute teachers, support workers, lunchroom workers and bus drivers on Wednesday, July 7, 2021, from 8 a.m - noon and 1 - 3:30 p.m. The final day to sign up for the first semester will be Tuesday, Aug. 3, from 8:30 a.m. - noon and 1-3:30 p.m.

Brilliant, Hamilton recognized for sportsmanship

By Scott Johnson General Manager Two Marion County Schools are being recognized by the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) for their sportsmanship during the 2020-2021 school year. Brilliant High School and Hamilton High School are among a total of 131 high schools which will be recognized at the 2021 AHSAA Sportsmanship Luncheon on Friday, July 23, at the Renaissance Hotel and Montgomery Convention Center for having no ejections and no fines for the 2020-2021 school year.

Garner appointed as head baseball coach

FAYETTE – Bevill State Community College (BSCC) is excited to announce the appointment of Travis Garner as the new Head Coach of the Men’s Baseball Team. Garner started his college baseball career playing for Meridian Community College (MCC). He then went on to start for two years at the University of Alabama (UA) before signing a professional contract with the Kansas City Royals. Since 2008, Garner has worked as a high school baseball coach. The Bevill State Baseball Program is located on the College’s Fayette Campus.
