Mechanic struck, killed in hit-and-run

Traffic can be seen backed up on Tuesday morning, April 30, as Alabama State Troopers closed both eastbound lanes on Interstate 22 near Twin for several hours while providing support in a hit-and-run incident, which left a mechanic dead.

TWIN - A mechanic was killed in a hit-and-run incident on Tuesday, April 30, while repairing a disabled vehicle on the shoulder of Interstate 22 in Marion County.
According to Alabama State Trooper-Hamilton Post Cpl. Mark Stone, at approximately 5 a.m., repairman Morris H. Welch Jr., 56, Empire, was killed when a 2019 Freightliner struck him while he was working on a vehicle near I-22’s mile marker 25.
Welch was an employee of M&M Tire and Mechanical Services in Graysville.


24/7 dispatch restored in Sheffield

HAMILTON - Local State Troopers stationed will be better equipped in dispatch services as full-time, 24-hour, seven days a week dispatch communications have been restored at the Quad-Cities Troopers Post in Sheffield.
Assistant Troop E Commander Lt. Jimmy Ward told the Journal Record that as of the beginning of August, police communication officers (PCOs) have again begun dispatching from the Quad Cities Post for the nine counties in Troop E’s district, which includes Marion, Colbert, Fayette, Franklin, Lamar, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Walker and Winston counties.

Box named Trooper of the Year

• Hamilton Post trooper earns top award

MONTGOMERY- A Hamilton Post state trooper was awarded the Alabama State Trooper Association (ASTA) Trooper of the Year award on April 30 in Montgomery.
David Box of Winfield was nominated and selected to receive the special award based on not only his work as a state trooper, but also  on the service he gives to his community.


Fayette man killed in crash near Brilliant

BRILLIANT - A two-vehicle crash in Marion County has claimed the life of a Fayette man.  
On Friday, June 29, Gresdrough V. Ivie Jr., 58, Fayette, was killed when the 1999 Toyota Corolla he was driving collided with a 2007 Hummer H2 driven by Robert J. Witherss, Trussville.  
According to State Trooper Cpl. Mark Stone, the crash occurred on State Highway 233, approximately five miles east of Brilliant at approximately 3:50 p.m.
Ivie was pronounced dead at the scene.  No further information was available as state troopers continue to investigate.
