Winfield Board of Education celebrates career tech accomplishments at meeting

WINFIELD — Representatives from Winfield city schools’ career tech programs spoke with the board of education during its regular meeting on Tuesday, March 11, to share their recent successes with the board.
Winfield Firefighter Blake Farley spoke about recent grants the program received, such as a $7,500 RC&D grant that allowed new gear to be purchased for students in the fire and rescue program.
Farley said students will begin hazardous material training after spring break. Despite the difficulty of the hazmat test, Farley said the class last year had a 90 percent pass rate.
Sabrina Handley, who teaches cosmetology, spoke about the class and what students were learning and what they had accomplished.
One of her students, Parker Threadgill, showed off the technique that won first-place at a recent Torch competition, a prize that included a scholarship.
Winfield Elementary School Principal Mallory Long spoke to the board about upcoming ACAP testing.
Long shared only four students didn’t make the cutoff score on the practice exam, and of those four, three qualified for good cause exemptions.
There was a parent meeting on March 17, followed by a parental engagement night, to talk about the ACAP test results and how to help their children prepare.
Darren Hollis was also approved as a substitute bus driver.
The next meeting will be on Tuesday, April 8.
