Daniel Harkness

Mr. Fred Daniel Harkness, better known as Daniel, 87, of Winfield, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at the Sunset Manor Nursing facility in Guin. Daniel was born in Fayette County, Ala., on June 2, 1937, to Fred Matthew and Sue Dell Harkness. He was a long-time member of the Winfield First Baptist Church and was a 1955 graduate of Winfield High School.
Daniel was very talented with his large hands. He was a machinist by trade, and he loved to have a large garden. His last work experience was at the University of Alabama in the engineering department.
He is survived by his children, Rhonda Robertson, Risa H. Grimsley (Alva), Fred Daniel “Butch” Harkness Jr. (Susan) and Jenny Harkness Allen; a brother, Jimmy Don Harkness; grandchildren, Chase Robertson (Gena), Reid Robertson (Priscilla), Jessica R. McCray (Freddie), Peyton R. Roulaine (Jim), Will Grimsley, Molly G. Beaugh (Adam), Mary Elizabeth H. Peters (Kevin) and Elizabeth Allen; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Mr. Harkness was preceded in death by his parents, two infant brothers and his sister, Johnnie Sue Beasley.
Heartfelt thanks go to Country Place Assisted Living and Sunset Manor Nursing Facility staff and Dr. Ron Moss. Thanks to Dot Housh for going to Sunset Manor to cut our daddy’s hair. Thank you also to a very special friend, Brenda Miles Sprinkle.
Funeral services for Mr. Harkness were held on March 9, 2025, at the Bowen Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in the Camp Comfort Community Cemetery.  Brother Tim Coleman of the First Baptist Church of Winfield was the officiating minister. Active pallbearers were Donny Robertson, Justin Beasley, Greg Beasley, Eddie Carter, Greg Youngblood, Tony Butler and his grandsons; honorary pallbearers were Daniel’s Men’s Sunday School class and Gary Barker.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Camp Comfort Cemetery Fund, 2002 Pineview Circle NW, Fayette, AL 35555, the Winfield Sports Athletics or to the First Baptist Church of Winfield Children’s Building Fund.
