HAMILTON — One of the downtown convenience stores in Hamilton recently cashed a $100 bill which turned out to be movie prop money. The bill was pen swiped, with the swipe turning yellow, but later turning black and found to be counterfeit upon deposit to the bank. Store employees feel the person cashing the bill may not have known it was counterfeit. They said there are four ways to check bills, and they were asked to share them with our readers. They said there are small ridges on the jacket on the president’s image on the bill which you can feel with your finger. They noted you can pen swipe the bill and sit it on the register for just a few seconds while you check out your customer. It only takes those few seconds to turn from yellow to black. The employees also said you can hold the bill up to the light and you can see the face of the president printed on the opposite side facing backwards. Lastly, they noted there is a blue strip on the bill, and if you’re able to get the tip of a fingernail or a safety pen underneath the strip, then it’s real. If you can’t--it’s counterfeit. Although they cannot share more details due to privacy concerns, the employees did want the public and area businesses to know there is “funny money” being circulated.
