HAMILTON - For this year’s Memorial Day edition of the Journal Record, I sat down with 20-year Army veteran Hytower Lewis. Lewis, 87, was kind enough to share some of his memories of his time in the United States Army. Lewis served in the Army from 1949 to 1970 and fought in the Korean War and the war in Vietnam.
“I have some good memories and some not so good memories,” Lewis said of his time in the service.
Lewis joined the army in June 1949, four years after the end of World War II. Two of Lewis’ older brothers, H.V., Jr., and Ruble, both served in World War II and returned home to Hamilton.
Seeing little opportunity in Hamilton in those days and wanting to follow in his brothers’ footsteps, Lewis joined the Army at age 17. After basic training, Lewis went to the Pacific islands as part of a demolition company assigned to destroy unused World War II munitions.
