500 career wins

Winfield head coach Joseph Wilson (center) was recognized for earning his 500th career win in the Lady Pirates’ 73-44 victory over Marion County in the opening round of the Marion County Varsity Girls Basketball Tournament on Tuesday, Jan. 22. The longtime head coach has had stops with both Winfield’s boys and girls head basketball coach.

No. 2 Winfield remains perfect; Hamilton’s Hollingsworth records first triple-double on varsity

WINFIELD - Winfield defeated Oakman 53-44 in Class 3A, Area 10 action to remain perfect on the season.
The Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Class 3A’s second-ranked Lady Pirates were tied with the Lady Wildcats at 13-all at the end of the first period.
Winfield took a 27-22 lead heading into halftime with a 14-9 second quarter.
The Lady Pirates added to their lead with a 16-12 third quarter. Both schools scored 10 points in the fourth to give the final of 53-44, Winfield.


Lady Pirates win Christmas tournament; Hamilton downs Jasper, Cordova in blowout wins

The Winfield Lady Pirates won the 2018 Winfield Christmas Tournament Varsity Girls championship after defeating Red Bay in the finals on Friday, Dec. 28. The Lady Pirates earned wins on Thursday, Dec. 27, over Holy Spirit Catholic and Sulligent. WINFIELD - Winfield won its own Christmas tournament after defeating Red Bay 64-42 in the championship game on Friday, Dec. 28.
The Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Class 3A’ sixth-ranked Lady Pirates led 8-7 at the end of the first quarter before adding 22 points to their total in the second to lead 30-18 at halftime.
Winfield outscored Red Bay 20-13 in the third and 14-11 in the fourth to capture the 22-point victory.
Stats for Winfield were not available at presstime.
The victory improved the Lady Pirates to a perfect 15-0.

Lady Pirates beat Lady Aggies in county clash

WINFIELD - Winfield earned a 60-42 victory over rival Hamilton on Tuesday, Dec. 11.
The Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Class 3A’s sixth-ranked Lady Pirates led 18-11 at the end of the first period before outscoring the Lady Aggies 17-9 in the second to hold a 37-20 halftime advantage.
Winfield scored 16 points in the third while Hamilton had seven points. The final period saw Hamilton trim Winfield’s lead by outscoring the Lady Pirates 15-9 to make the final score of 60-42.

GUIN - Marion County lost to Berry 51-40 in the Northwest Alabama Conference Girls Basketball Tournament semifinals on Friday, Dec. 7.
The Lady Raiders’ Josie Lipsey finished with a team-high 12 points.
Cara Sullivan added 11 points. Erin Culp and Madison Stewart each had six points.
Caitlyn Jones added three points while Torie Taylor had two points.

HAMILTON - Hamilton earned its second win of the season with a 54-50 victory over rival Haleyville on Tuesday, Nov. 27.
Hamilton’s Paisley Sorrells finished with a game-high 21 points.
Mia Hollingsworth added eight points and eight rebounds.
Lexie Childers contributed nine rebounds while Gracey Dezso pulled in eight boards as the Lady Aggies improved to 2-3 on the season.
