Red Raiders fall prey to Tornadoes

REFORM - The Red Raiders landed their first loss of the season on Friday.
The Pickens County Tornadoes routed the Marion County Red Raiders 42-12 during Friday (Sept. 10) night’s Class 1A, Region 6 game in Reform.
Pickens County won the coin toss and deferred to receive in the second half. The Red Raiders did not score in the first two quarters.
The Red Raiders had a quick three-and-out after receiving the opening kickoff. Pickens County received the punt at their own 24-yard line and initiated a scoring drive. On third-and-15 from midfield, Pickens County quarterback connected with a wide receiver for a 50-yard catch and run touchdown. The kick-after was good, making the game 7-0 with 6:42 left in the first frame.
Pickens County found itself back in the end zone with 6:29 left in the second quarter. After a 50-drive fro their own 35-yard line, the Tornadoes connected through the air on second and 10 from the Red Raiders’ 13 yard-line. The extra point was blocked by Red Raider Preston Conniff. The Tornadoes scored two possessions later, on a 35-yard pass connection with 1:25 left in the half. A two-point conversion attempt failed.
Receiving the second-half kickoff, the Tornadoes began their third scoring drive. An eight-yard kickoff put Pickens County on the Marion County 48-yard line. A seven-play combo put the Tornadoes on three and 13 on the 13-yard line. A quarterback keeper worked Pickens County on the board again with 8:19 in the third quarter. The two-point pass attempt was good, bring the score to 27-0.
Marion County lit up their scoreboard for the first time late in the third quarter. From their own 47-yard line, Red Raider quarterback Gavin Cole connected with Landon Marrow on the first play of the possession for a 53-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion fell one yard short carried by Silas, bring the score to 27-6.
After an exchange of possessions, Pickens County scored with 4:16 left in the game following a progression from their own 44-yard line. The two-point conversion was good, bringing the game to 35-6 with 2:25 left in the third frame.
Beginning their drive on their own 38-yard line, the Red Raiders handed the ball to Silas for two runs for 20 yards. Cole connected with Landon Marrow on third down and nine for a 42-yard touchdown. Cole’s two-point pass attempt to Silas was no good, bringing the score to 35-12.
The Tornadoes punched right back during the following kickoff return, with a 72-yard return with 2:06 left in the match. The extra point was good, putting the score where it would stay at the final whistle 42-12.
