Pirates’ big 1Q leads to blowout win over Tarrant

WINFIELD - The Pirates’ gave up no yards and scored 41 points in the first quarter en route to their first region victory of the season over the Tarrant Wildcats 54-0 on Friday, Sep. 3, at Estes Hudson Stadium.
The win improved Winfield to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in Class 3A, region 6. This was Tarrant’s first game since the 2019 season, as the Wildcats forfeited all games last season.
The Pirates offense took advantage of a short field most of the night as Tarrant never crossed the 35-yard line.  
“Any win is a big win especially in region play,” said Winfield head coach David McKinney in an interview following the game. “I’m tickled to death for the win and we got to play a lot of people tonight and I am proud of them.”
“We have a big region game next week and we gotta get after it and improve on us. We still have kids out with covid and we got to keep working and kids that haven’t got to play as much are going to get to.
“It’s a team effort and I'm glad our old guys got to cheer for our young guys tonight, and that is what it's all about,” McKinney said.
Winfield received the opening kickoff and marched down the field using the passing game as Aidan Quinn completed a 28-yard touchdown pass to D’Angelo Bankhead.
Brooks Smith added the extra point and Winfield took the early lead 7-0 with 10:51 left in the first quarter. After holding the Tarrant offense and forcing a punt, the Pirates set up their next drive on the Wildcats 25-yard line. Drew Cook ran for seven yards, and then Quinn found Bankhead again for 13 more yards.
Joseph Cox finished off the drive with a five-yard scoring run. Smith added the extra point and increased the lead to 14-0 with 8:47 left in the first quarter.
On the ensuing drive, Jordan Mastin intercepted the Tarrant quarterback's pass to give the Pirates the ball back at the Wildcats’ 40-yard line.
Cox broke free for 19 yards, and then Quinn passed to a leaping Rain Nolan in the end zone for another Pirates touchdown.
Smith tacked on the extra point to run the lead to 21-0 with 7:21 left in the first quarter.
Winfield’s defense forced a turnover on downs on Tarrant’s next drive, and took over at the Wildcats’ five-yard line.
The Pirates needed only one play as Cook rushed into the end zone from five yards out.
Smith’s extra point was good and the lead increased to 28-0 with 5:06 left in the first quarter. Tarrant's next drive ended after three plays as Winfield’s Carson Miles forced and recovered a fumble to give the Pirates the ball at the Tarrant 28-yard line.
Cox found a running lane again and blistered a path for a 28-yard touchdown. Smith's extra point pushed the lead to 35-0 with 3:15 left in the first quarter.
The Pirates were able to recover the ensuing kickoff after the kick was fumbled by the Tarrant receiver and Dylan Walker recovered it giving Winfield the ball at the Wildcats’ 22.
Keylan Hughes ran the ball on all three plays of the drive covering 22 yards and scored on a four-yard touchdown run.
Smith’s point after missed its mark, but the lead stretched to 41-0 with 1:45 left in the first quarter.
Hughes added another touchdown later in the second quarter on a 10-yard run to give Winfield a 47-0 lead going into halftime.
The Pirates added one score late in the fourth quarter as Brady May threw a screen pass to Kade Estill for a 27-yard touchdown pass.
Smith’s extra point was good to push the lead to 54-0 before time expired and the Pirates sailed to victory.
Winfield finished the game with 204 total yards, with 107 passing and 97 rushing yards.
Hughes led the Winfield rushing attack with 70 yards on five carries and two touchdowns. Cox ran four times for 49 yards and two scores. Braxton Tilley ran four times for 16 yards, and Cook rushed twice for 12 yards and a score.
Quinn completed five-of-eight passes for 80 yards and two touchdowns. May was one-of-one for 27 yards and a touchdown.
Bankhead led the receivers with two receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown. Estill caught one pass for 27 yards and a score. Nolan caught one pass for 23 yards and a touchdown.
Andrew Wallace had one catch for 18 yards.
Winfield (3-0, 1-0 Class 3A, Region 6) will travel for a region game against the Oakman Wildcats (2-1, 1-0 Class 3A, Region 6) on Friday, Sep. 10.
