Pirates defense holds off Lions late rally

Winfield quarterback Joseph Estes (19) leaps over a Haleyville defender to pick up extra yards in the Pirates’ 19-13 victory over the Lions.

HALEYVILLE - Winfield’s defense withstood a fourth-quarter rally and picked up a late touchdown run by Joseph Cox to seal a 19-13 season-opening win over the Haleyville Lions on Friday, Aug. 23, in Haleyville.
Leading 13-0 going into the fourth quarter, the Winfield Pirates’ defense found themselves on their heels as Haleyville scored on a four-yard run, and after a failed two-point conversion, Haleyville would tally on a 55-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 13-13 with 8:04 left in the game.
Cox then put the Pirates on his back and closed out a 60-yard scoring drive with a six-yard score to give the Pirates the lead for good.
“We played a lot of young people tonight,” Winfield head coach David McKinney said in an interview following the game. “We made some mistakes, but we gained some experience as well and we have to improve and go back to work Sunday to get ready for a tough Fayette County team.
