Susan Kathleen Taylor Thomas Castillo, 62, of Birmingham, formerly of Winfield, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2022, at her daughter’s residence in Huntsville after a courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma.
Although her journey with cancer was long and excruciating, she passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones offering words of love and comfort.
She was born in Guin on June 28, 1960, to Mary Ruth Simmons and Cecil H. Taylor. She was a 1978 graduate of Winfield City High School and later received a nursing degree from the University of Alabama. She held nursing positions at UAB and Brookwood hospitals where she served as an oncology nurse working on research projects, provided care on the geriatric psychiatric unit, and cared for AIDS patients during the height of the epidemic. She was a very gifted pianist. She shared her musical gifts from the time she was in high school until she became too sick to play.
Ms. Castillo is survived by her children - Josh (Allison) Thomas, Leigh (Alyssa) Thomas, Katie Castillo (Tyler) Marshall; precious grandchildren - Henry and Frances Thomas; her brother - Allen (Janice) Taylor; sister - Charlotte Taylor (Dwight) Roberts; nieces - Amy and Julie; nephew - Dillon; great-nephews - Hudson and Holden South; and her long-time beloved friend - Pam Benton.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father.
A memorial service for Ms. Castillo was held on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2022, from the First United Methodist Church, Montevallo.
