WINFIELD — Beginning tomorrow night at 7, Self Express Productions will be presenting a play based on Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic novel, “The Scarlett Letter,” at their Freedom Theatre in Winfield.
The novel, originally published in 1850, was one of the first mass-produced books in American history and is considered a classic.
Self Express Productions co-producer Josh Kauffman said that he has been wanting to do this play for a long time, and wanted to find a good adaption of the novel for the stage.
“‘The Scarlet Letter has been on the list for a while, and we’re glad to finally have the rights to do it,” Kauffman said.
“We looked at several versions of the script because there are several adaptations out there. The one that we chose is adapted by David John Preece. We chose it because it preserves the story and the emotion of the story, but makes the language a little easier on the ear than the original Hawthorne. It made the story more accessible for us.”
