Pirates cruise to conference crown with wins over Sulligent, Gordo

Winfield senior Luke Jungels was named the West Alabama Conference Boys Basketball Tournament Most Valuable Player. Jungels finished with eight points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal in the finals. He added 20 points, three rebounds, two steals and a block in the semifinals

FAYETTE - Winfield defeated Gordo 52-41 in the West Alabama Conference Boys Basketball Tournament Finals on Saturday, Dec. 22.
The Pirates led 16-14 at the end of the opening period before building their lead in the second with a 15-9 run to go into halftime with an eight-point advantage.
Gordo outscored Winfield 10-8 in the third to trim the Pirates’ lead to six points. Winfield put away the Green Wave in the fourth with a 13-8 quarter to capture the 11-point victory.
The Pirates used a balanced attack with just one double-digit scorer and eight players registering points.
Winfield’s Graham Bradford led the way with 12 points and four assists.
Jackson Elkins added nine points, eight rebounds and a steal.
The tournament’s most valuable player, Luke Jungels, contributed eight points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Nolen Miles had seven points and an assist. Blaise Miles added six points, two rebounds, two steals and an assist.
Taylor Chandler and Brady Franks each had four points. Chandler added three assists, two steals and a rebound.
Camden Clark had two points, one rebound and an assist. Dawson Haney had two rebounds and a steal. Josh Estes added a steal.
Friday, Dec. 21
FAYETTE - Winfield earned a hard-fought 60-51 win over Sulligent in the WAC semifinals.
Winfield outscored the Blue Devils 18-14 in the first period. Sulligent responded by outscoring the Pirates 16-14 in the second to give Winfield a 32-30 lead at the half.
Winfield extended its lead in the second half by outscoring Sulligent 14-8 in the third and 14-13 in the fourth to secure the 60-51 win.
The Pirates’ Jungels tied for a game-high 20 points with Sulligent’s Tanner Collins. He added three rebounds, two steals and a block.
Bradford added 16 points, four steals, three assists and three rebounds.
Nolen Miles had five points and two rebounds.
Four Pirates recorded a four-point outing with Elkins, Franks, Chandler and Estes reaching the mark.
Elkins and Franks added four rebounds and an assist apiece while Franks also recorded a steal.
Chandler had four assists, one steal and a rebound. Estes pulled down one board.
Blaise Miles had two points, six assists, three rebounds and a steal. Clark contributed one point, two rebounds and an assist.
Haney had four rebounds while Riley Hubbert and Kyriahn McCoy added a rebound apiece.
