• McCollum, Junkin, Moore, Belk earn recognition on state’s squad
MONTGOMERY - Marion County saw five athletes recognized in the 2018 Alabama Sports Writers Association’s high school football All-state teams and honorable mentions released on Saturday, Dec. 22.
The county’s lone first-team representative was Marion County High School’s Braden Pyron.
The 6-5, 200-pound senior was named as Class 1A’s placekicker.
Pyron converted on 30-of-32 extra-point attempts and connected on 3-of-6 field goal tries with a long from 44 yards. He missed two from 47 yards away and had one blocked.
For his career, Pyron connected on 128-of-173 extra-point tries and 8-of-13 field goal attempts.
The senior pulled in 42 passes for 646 yards and four touchdowns this season. He added 26 runs for 210 yards.
Defensively, he amassed 105 tackles and four interceptions this season. He also had 10 tackles for loss.
As a punter, Pyron had 25 punts for 1,058 total yards--an average of 42.3 yards per punt. He had five punts over 50 yards and two land inside the 10-yard-line.
Marion County High School also saw Deuce Belk receive recognition with the quarterback being named an honorable mention in Class 1A.
The 6-2, 210-pound quarterback finished with 1,198 rushing yards and 20 scores on 164 carries. The sophomore completed 65-of-120 pass attempts for 1,028 yards and 10 touchdowns to just four interceptions.
Winfield saw two players named to the Class 3A second team in De’Vandrius McCollum and Walker Junkin.
McCollum played both offensive and defensive line for the Pirates with his selection to the all-state team coming as an offensive lineman.
To go along with anchoring the Pirate offensive line, McCollum amasses 33 total tackles (19 solo, 14 assists) and added 11.5 tackles for loss. The 5-7, 200-pound junior added 3.5 sacks.
Junkin earned the nod as a defensive back for Class 3A’s second team. The senior amassed 70 total tackles (54 solos, 16 assists), including two for a loss. The 5-10, 170-pound senior also had five interceptions.
Junkin added 37 receptions for 526 yards and four scores on the offensive side. He also had 16 runs for 79 yards and three touchdowns while completing both of his pass attempts for 15 yards.
Hackleburg’s Kaleb Moore was selected as an athlete for Class 1A’s second team.
The 6-3, 220-pound senior rushed for 792 yards and 17 touchdowns on 198 carries. He added a three-yard reception. The signal-caller completed 117-of-217 pass attempts for 1,443 yards and 11 scores with eight interceptions.
Moore also returned 15 kickoffs for 424 yards and a score. He added 60 total tackles and an interception. Moore accounted for 29 total touchdowns and passed for 4,362 yards and 41 touchdowns.
