High school welcomes new band director

Winfield City High School’s new band director Austin Woods started off his first year at WCHS with a summer band camp and said he is looking forward to working with the WCHS students.

WINFIELD - WINFIELD - Winfield City High School welcomed band director Austin Woods in July, as band camp kicked off July 23 - Aug. 1.
Woods served as Winfield Middle School’s band director for the past two years, from fall of 2016 until spring of 2018, where he served as an understudy for former high school band director Nathan Garner.
Woods officially began working with the high school band on July 9, he said, doing some optional practices for musicians.
“He’s falling in very well and he’s done an excellent job directing band camp and getting things ready so far,” said Winfield City High School Principal and Interim Winfield Superintendent of Education Benji Parrish.
According to Woods, band camp was a success and working with the high school students has been a fun undertaking.
“During band camp, we usually learn our halftime show, we go over the music we will play, learn our march,” said Woods.
Woods said he has thoroughly enjoyed working with the high school students and he believes the students feel the same way.
Woods said the transition from the middle school to the high school was smooth.
“This has been a really easy transition. Because I’ve already been here for two years and I know how things are done, it’s been a breeze,” said Woods.
Woods said that the Winfield community stands out because of its enormous support for local games and for the band.
“One thing that has been really surprising for me, moving into this area, is how much community support there has been. It’s hard to find a community that really comes together every Friday night and comes to support all the different things that are going on here. That’s amazing here and it’s easy to settle into that,” said Woods.
In addition to directing the band, Woods will teach music appreciation and the indoor drumline. These classes and the band have other performances scheduled during the year, outside of football season, including a Christmas performance.
Woods is originally from Florence. He attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, graduating in 2016.
Woods was a part of the Million Dollar Band while in Tuscaloosa and said that he met Garner through his participation in the band.
