Free tree giveaways in honor of Arbor Day tentatively set for Feb. 25 & 26

HAMILTON & WINFIELD — Weather permitting, the Marion County Office of the Alabama Forestry Commission will hold their annual tree giveaways next week in honor of Arbor Day, which is observed on different dates depending on the state and city. Alabama’s Arbor Week is Feb. 22-28.
Currently, the Hamilton tree giveaway is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 25, in front of city hall from 9 a.m. until noon.
The Winfield tree giveaway is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 26, in front of city hall from 9 a.m. until noon.
Both Hamilton and Winfield have been designated as Tree Cities for decades, with Winfield celebrating its 30th anniversary this year of being a Tree City U.S.A. Community. Hamilton has been a Tree City for 29 years.
During the giveaway, a variety of tree saplings will be available free to the public while supplies last.
This event will also provide the public with information on proper tree planting methods and the importance of native vegetation for our community’s health and environment.
Some of the free tree saplings scheduled for this year include: Dogwood, Southern Crab Apple, Sassafras, Persimmon, Black Tupelo, Ginkgo and White Oak.
