MARION COUNTY - The second week of county-wide basketball has come to an end with some teams entering tournaments and even starting their season.
The Winfield Pirates took part in the Phil Campbell Thanksgiving Tournament this past week. Winfield won their first game against Rogers 60-56, but fell to Shoals Christian in the semi-finals 53-46, sending them into one final game in the loser’s bracket. They won their final game against Addison 61-49, ending the tournament on a high with a hard fought win.
The Hamilton Aggies kicked off their season last week with a win against Fayette County, but lost their tournament game against Moody on Monday, Nov. 21, with a score line of 66-50.
Brilliant lost their game to Sulligent on Tuesday, Nov. 22, with a score line of 66-50, bringing their record to 0-5 for the season so far.
The Marion County Red Raiders opened their season with a loss 82-70 to Deshler on Tuesday. They will play Winfield this Thursday at home.
Phillips did not play this weekend, but hold a 3-1 record going into this week’s game against the Brilliant Tigers on Thursday, Dec. 1.
Stats for Winfield’s first game in the tournament against Rogers are: Preston Nelson had 1 rebound, 2 assists and 1 steal; Sean Wyers had 8 rebounds; Slate Gilbert had 2 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal; Tyler Mays had 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal; J.D. Bowman had 2 assists and 2 steals; Drew Cook had 3 rebounds; Haiden Channell had 1 rebound and 3 steals; Miles Miles had 1 rebound; Hudson Holland had 4 rebounds; Thackary Box had 2 assists and 1 steal; the top three point-getters were Nelson with 18, Wyers with 12 and Gilbert with 9.
Winfield stats for the game on Nov. 23, are: Nelson with 2 rebounds and 2 steals; Gilbert with 4 rebounds and 2 assists; Holland with 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal; Boman with 7 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals; Cook with 5 rebounds and 2 steals; Mays with 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and 1 block; Wyers with 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal; Box with 1 rebound, 3 assists and 1 steal; Channell with 4 rebounds; and Miles with 2 assists. Scoring the top three points were Nelson with 22, Gilbert with 13 and Holland with 7.
