Bears fall to the Chiefs at home

BEAR CREEK - The R.A. Hubbard Chiefs defeated the Phillips Bears Friday night 18-6 in Bear Creek.
The Chiefs took the opening kickoff after Phillips won the toss and deferred to the second half.
The Chiefs were in the end zone in four snaps. R.A. Hubbards’ Tyran Murphy found the route open to the right from the Chiefs 40-yard-line. The two-point conversion was no good, leaving R.A. Hubbard ahead 6-0, with 10:04 left in the first quarter.
The Bears were forced to punt in the next series, putting the Chiefs at their own 29. R.A. Hubbard worked their way down to the Phillips’ 23, where Murphy brought down a catch for the touchdown. The two-point try was no good to make the score 12-0.
Hubbard scored their last points of the night midway into the second quarter.  The Chiefs’ Quintez McCoy scored from five yards out. The two-point conversion was again no good, giving R.A. Hubbard an 18-0 lead.
Phillips got the ball at their own 14 on the kickoff. Phillips quarterback Nevin Elkins found Hayden Hulsey open  and a personal foul face mask against the Chiefs moved Phillips to the Bears’ 27 yard line.
The Chiefs were hit with an offsides penalty to move the ball five more yards. Three plays later, it was a completion to Hulsey again for a first down to the R.A. Hubbard 12.
Elkins kept the ball for the touchdown. The two-point try was no good to finalize the scoring with 3:44 left in the first half.
With the loss, the Bears are now 1-4 for the season and 1-2 in Class 1A, Region 8 play.
Phillips will travel to Guin this Friday, Sept. 24, to face the Marion County Red Raiders in a non-region county rivalry game.
