Tigers lose to Wildcats for fifth loss - Berry 42 - Brilliant 6

BRILLIANT - Brilliant suffered its 27th-consecutive region loss when Berry defeated the Tigers 42-6 on Friday, Oct. 12.
The loss dropped Brilliant to 2-5 overall and 0-5 in Class 1A, Region 6. Berry improved to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in Region 6 play.
Brilliant received the opening kickoff but was unable to sustain the drive.
Berry’s opening possession ended with the Wildcats’ Isaac Darty capping it off with a 1-yard run. A successful point-after try gave Berry a 7-0 lead with 6:14 left in the first quarter.
After the two teams swapped possessions, Brilliant drove down the field to the 1-yard-line. Berry’s Johnathan Locke recovered a Tiger fumble and raced 99 yards for a score. A missed extra-point kept the Wildcat lead at 13-0 with 5:23 left in the opening half.
After holding Brilliant out of the end zone, Berry tacked on a final first-half score with 16 ticks remaining on the clock before halftime. Joshua Cannon caught a 20-yard scoring pass for the touchdown. A successful 2-point try extended the Wildcat advantage to 21-0.
Berry started the second half with a bang when Samuel Franklin pulled in the second-half kickoff at the 30-yard-line and scored from 70 yards out. The extra-point was good to give the Wildcats a 28-0 lead just 15 seconds into the second half.
Berry’s Darty added his second score of the contest with 4:46 left in the third quarter on a 40-yard run. A good extra-point gave the Wildcats a 35-point advantage.
The Wildcats added their final score with 20 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Trenton Smith scored on a 5-yard run for the touchdown. The extra-point was true to give Berry a 42-0 lead heading into the fourth.
Brilliant’s Braden Burleson was able to find his way into the end zone with 5:58 left in the contest from 15 yards out. An unsuccessful extra-point try kept the eventual final of 42-6.
The Tiger offense compiled 206 yards with 80 coming through the air and 126 on the ground.
Quarterback Kade Bryant completed 9-of-24 pass attempts for 80 yards and added seven runs for 36 yards.
Trevor Barton finished with 17 carries for 50 yards and pulled in a 1-yard pass. Burleson had five receptions for 54 yards and ran three times for 17 yards and a score. Braxton Mayo had three receptions for 26 yards while adding 23 rushing yards on six attempts.
Brilliant hits the road to Fayette County to face region foe Hubbertville (5-2, 3-2) in Class 1A, Region 6 action on Friday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m.
The Lions hold a 43-28 advantage in the all-time series, including last season’s 34-14 Hubbertville victory.
