Rebecca Sue Benton

Rebecca Sue Benton

Rebecca Sue Benton, 75, of Winfield, passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at North Alabama Medical Center in Florence. Rebecca was born on Jan. 23, 1951, in Fayette County, Ala., to the late Elzi “Bo” Garrard and Lillie Burleson Garrard.
She was a faithful member of Harmony Grove Baptist Church and lived her life guided by her strong Christian faith. After high school, Rebecca began her working life by babysitting children from her home. She later worked in several area garment plants, including Oneida, where she worked as an inspector, and at Reltoc and Tullahoma, where she worked as a seamstress until her retirement. Through the years, her greatest and most treasured role was that of wife, mother and grandmother. To her children, Rebecca was the perfect Christian mother. She loved her family fiercely and gave of herself in a quiet, selfless way that touched everyone who knew her. She enjoyed living a simple life, spending time with the people she loved most. Rebecca especially loved cooking and was well known for the meals she prepared for her family. She often made favorite dishes just for her children, even when they were foods she didn’t particularly enjoy herself. Her love showed through the many small things she did for those around her. She was also a devoted Auburn fan and rarely missed the opportunity to watch a game and cheer on the Tigers.
Rebecca is survived by her beloved husband of 56 years, Charlie Ray Benton; her children, Tony Ray Benton (Patsy), Tammie Banks (Fred), Christopher Lee Benton and Julie Amanda Benton; her grandchildren, Skyler Benton (Sarah), Adam Benton, Tori Smith, Cecily Benton and Katlyn Harvey (Josh); her great-grandchildren, Sophia Benton, Lula Belle Harvey and Mallie Grace Harvey; and a host of nieces, nephews and other family members.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Marie Heathcock; her brother, Roy Gene Garrard; and her daughter-in-law, Peggy Benton.
Funeral services for Rebecca were held on March 17, 2026, at the Bowen Funeral Home Chapel, with burial following in the Harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Harmony Grove Cemetery Fund, 15380 County Road 21 North, Winfield, AL 35594, or to the American Lung Association at lung.org.
