HAMILTON — The Haleyville Lions (5-3) now have only one region loss to Dora following a commanding win Friday night against the Hamilton Aggies (1-7). The Lions won 52-12.
The Aggies kicked off to Haleyville, with Matthew Coleman taking the football all the way home for the touchdown. The six points were negated on a penalty, starting the series on the Lions 24-yard-line. Coleman, now in the quarterback slot, kept for six yards. Will Bartes then moved the chains on a 13 yard carry. It was the Coleman brothers when Matthew hit Brett for nine yards to put Haleyville into Aggie territory at the 47.
Three plays later, Matthew completed a 25-yarder to Evan Cagle in the flats at the Aggie 20. Bartes’ number was called twice where he scored on 1st-and-goal for the Lions. Parker Hulsey’s PAT was good to give Haleyville a 7-0 lead.
The Aggie punted on 4th & 10 in the next series with Blake Hood calling for a fair catch at the Lion 38.
Matthew went to work, carrying the ball to just shy of a first down at the Haleyville 47. Brett made the first down on a carry to just beyond the 48-yard-line. Andrew Barton scored the touchdown behind some good blocking. Hulsey’s PAT gave Haleyville a 14-0 lead.
The Aggies first score came in the following series. Quarterback Mason Holloway handed off to Dawson Taylor from the Aggie 25. Taylor moved the ball to the Aggie 32. Holloway went to the air for a 25-yard completion. A holding call against Hamilton moved the ball back to the Aggie 44. There he found Kenly Cochran open at the Lion 27. Kevin McBride gave the hosts a 1st-and-goal at the 10. Holloway scored as the first quarter ended. The two-point attempt failed, making the score 14-6.
It took three plays for Haleyville to score in the next series. From the Lions 33, Bartes traveled down to the Aggie 22, where Matthew hit Brett in the right corner of the end zone. Hulsey again was good on the PAT, stretching the lead 21-6.
Hayden Gilbert intercepted the ball for Haleyville in the proceeding drive. From the Aggie 37, Matthew went to Sutherland, Bartes, Sutherland, Cagle on throws and found Sutherland in the end zone for the TD. The PAT was good, putting Haleyville ahead 28-6.
Gilbert intercepted again in the next drive, putting Haleyville at their own 26. It was Bartes on two carries and Coleman on a keeper to the Haleyville 48. Matthew put it on the mark to Cagle for the touchdown. The PAT made the score 35-6.
The Lions kicked off. Hayden Ables went 83 yards for a return to the end zone. The 2-point attempt failed, making the score 35-12.
Haleyville started their series at the Lion 32. Bartes broke tackles down to midfield. A pass interference call against Hamilton moved the Lions to the Aggie 37, with a 1st-and-10. Matthew went option right to Bartes for 7 yards and completed a pass to Brett down to the 10 yard line. Matthew scored on the next play. The PAT put Haleyville ahead 42-12.
The Aggies were forced to punt, which was blocked with Gilbert returning the ball for a 25 yard touchdown. Hulsey’s PAT was good, giving the Lions a commanding 49-12 lead at halftime.
The Aggies fumbled the second half kickoff, with Haleyville recovering at the Aggie 19. Parker kicked a 28-yard-field goal to finalize the score 52-12.
The Lions will travel to Corner for their final region game Friday. Hamilton hosts Northside Friday.
