GUIN - Jenni Jones grew up working in the fields. One month a year during middle school, and every day during high school, a truck would come by and take students out to a field where they would work picking potatoes or pulling up weeds with their bare hands in exchange for meager rations of rice and water.
For the people of Cuba, this is the current reality.
On Monday, July 26, Jones stood outside of Guin City Hall to raise awareness of the situation in Cuba.
Jones said she was inspired by demonstrations in Cuba that began on July 26, an important date in Cuban history. It is the anniversary of a key victory Fidel Castro’s forces won during the revolution that put him in power.
On that day this year, thousands of Cubans took to the streets to demand freedom, which was met with violence from the Cuban government.
Jones said this spurred Cubans around the world to take action.
