Gov. Kay Ivey announced school campuses will not reopen this school year during a joint press conference today with State School Superintendent Dr. Eric Mackey and State Health Officer Scott Harris.
Educators were preparing for students to return to classrooms on Monday, April 6. Marion County and Winfield City schools have been closed since Monday, March 16.
According to press reports, Mackey has instructed parents that they should prepare for students to finish the school year through distance learning.
Marion County Superintendent of Education Ann West said the announcement was unexpected and superintendents will be meeting with Mackey tomorrow (Friday, March 27) to get more details.
Winfield Superintendent of Education Chris Cook said Winfield City Schools will be developing plans next week.
