Obituary policy
The Journal Record will be glad to run any obituary free-of-charge as long as there is a stated
Marion County connection.
Photos
There is no charge to include a photograph with an obituary, but no faxed or
instant photographs will be accepted.
Photos may be picked up at the JR after the obituary appears in the paper.
Submission
All obituaries must be submitted by a funeral home. Obituaries from individuals
will not be accepted. Any changes regarding an obituary already submitted by a
funeral home must be made by the funeral home handling the services.
Individual obituaries submitted as soon as possible by the funeral home (by
e-mail, mail, fax, or in person) give the widest latitude in preparation time.
If there is a mistake on behalf of the funeral home submitting an obituary, that
funeral home will be charged $50 to rerun the corrected obituary. If the Journal Record makes a mistake, we will gladly rerun the obituary free-of-charge.
The Journal Record reserves the right to edit obituaries for length and clarity.
Format
The Journal Record has a standard obituary format that is used for all death notices. If the
funeral home and/or deceased’s family wants the obituary to be published in a format of their choosing
outside of the Journal Record’s standard format, then the funeral home and/or deceased’s family will be charged for the space in which the obituary appears at the Journal Record’s open, per-column-inch advertising rate.
Deadline
The deadline for submitted obituaries is Wednesdays at 5 p.m.
Obituaries are typed and proofed by Thursday morning and then laid out for the
upcoming Wednesday edition on Friday morning. No changes will be accepted past
this time, unless the funeral home and/or deceased’s family wants the obituary to appear as a paid advertisement, charged at the Journal Record’s open, per-column-inch advertising rate, with a minimum charge of $50.
Publication of a paid obituary must also fall within the Journal Record’s deadlines, which for obituaries is Wednesday afternoon at 5.
